Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties
- 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Caramelized Onions
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
For Assembly
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (or Swiss cheese)
- 4 burger buns
- Mayonnaise
- Lettuce
- Tomato slices
- Pickles (optional)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 25 to 30 minutes until they turn golden brown and caramelized. Lower the heat as needed to prevent burning and ensure even cooking.
- Prepare the Patties: While the onions cook, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce in a mixing bowl. Mix gently but thoroughly, then form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
- Cook the Burgers: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties on the heat and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired level of doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty to melt.
- Toast the Buns: While the patties cook, optionally toast the burger buns on the grill or in a skillet until lightly browned and warm.
- Assemble the Burgers: Spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of each bun, then layer with fresh lettuce and tomato slices. Place the cooked burger patty topped with melted cheese next, followed by a generous scoop of caramelized onions. Add pickles if desired, then cover with the top bun.
- Serve Hot: Serve each burger immediately while warm and enjoy the robust blend of flavors and textures.
Notes
- Caramelized onions can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- For a gourmet twist, substitute cheddar cheese with blue cheese or gruyère.
- To keep burgers juicy, avoid pressing down on the patties while cooking.
- Use fresh, high-quality ground beef for the best flavor and texture.
