Description
These irresistible churro cruffins combine the flaky, buttery goodness of puff pastry with the sweet cinnamon sugar coating of a classic churro. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, these delightful treats are perfect for breakfast or a sweet snack.
Ingredients
Scale
Puff Pastry
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
Cinnamon Sugar Topping
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
Other Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon whole milk
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin or line it with muffin papers to ensure easy removal of the cruffins.
- Roll Puff Pastry: Place thawed puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll each sheet until it’s slightly thinner, about 1/8 inch thick, to achieve maximum flakiness.
- Mix Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until well combined.
- Cut Pastry Sheets: Cut each pastry sheet into 4×6-inch rectangles. Stack two rectangles together for each cruffin, creating a total of 6 stacks.
- Brush with Butter and Sugar: Brush the top of each stack with melted butter. Generously sprinkle cinnamon sugar over each piece to ensure even coverage and a sweet crust.
- Roll and Place in Tin: Roll up each stack into a spiral or log shape. Stand each rolled stack upright and place it into a muffin cup.
- Apply Egg Wash: Beat the egg with the whole milk. Brush the tops of each cruffin with this egg wash to get a shiny and golden finish after baking.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cruffins are puffed and deep golden brown on top.
- Final Touches: Once slightly cooled, brush each cruffin with additional melted butter and roll in more cinnamon sugar if desired for that extra sweet, churro-style finish.
Notes
- For best results, ensure puff pastry is thawed but still cold before rolling.
- Use a light hand when rolling out the pastry to avoid tearing.
- Stacking two layers of pastry ensures a nice flaky texture inside the cruffins.
- Brushing with egg wash is crucial for a beautiful golden color.
- Serve warm for the best flavor and texture; cruffins can be reheated briefly in the oven.
